What an innovative and visionary project this is! Seeing the four different lives on Friday the 27th made me wonder how much the city is like a plate of spaghetti, with all of the different
lives in it more or less going on side by side, in the same place, but not connecting very much. None of the people wearing cameras last time seemed to meet one another, and
probably don't in their lives on other days either. What holds us together, then? What holds the city together? Are people, at the least, aware of one another, acknowledging
the incredible variety of others they share their urban home with? Or do we all have a worm's eye view? When we lead our individual lives, like those wearing the cameras, do we seem
to care enough about others, those we can't even see, in what we do?

A really striking thing about the video views of
the lives of the camwearers comes from the
fact that the camera was not focused on the
protagonist, the "star," but instead on that
person's surrounding community, and
especially their interlocutors--everyone they
were talking to and the people also who were
talking wtih them. One thing that
could be noticed was that we really do a lot of
listening to one another, and offer other kinds
of support and sometimes just simple
"presence" for one another. After all, every
time someone speaks, it's not just the person
and their speaking that's important, but that
someone makes their words real by listening
to them. There's usually a relationship
involved!
The view of the city, or of the
social world we all inhabit, that SYMPHONY
OF A CITY gives is a much more social one,
less individual-oriented, than I am used to
seeing. It's more real about what makes a
city, or any kind of community for that matter.
It allows us to see that people do live in the
context of all kinds of other people, with whom
they have relationships of different kinds. It
also is neat in showing all the urban space
that surrounds us when we are in the city. We
live in a place after all, not just in our heads!

was so surprised when at City
Hall on April 27th, and watching the streaming
video, to see how much of the space around
the people is taken up with streets--all that
concrete in long strips going on and on
(especially when people were driving) was
amazing! Not much grass to be seen...
